Sore elbow sidelines Raiders quarterback Russell

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

aMarcus Russell was held out of team drills for the second straight practice Wednesday because his throwing elbow was still sore after banging it off the helmet of Darren McFadden.

The Oakland Raiders hoped their franchise quarterback would be healthy enough to practice a day after hurting his elbow. He did some individual drills, working on footwork and tossing a few passes lightly.

But he did not show off his strong arm and on his only long pass of the day he just tossed it high in the air to receiver Todd Watkins instead of throwing it on a line.

Shortly after that, trainer Rod Martin talked to the coaching staff and Russell only watched for the remainder of the day with ice wrapped around the elbow.

“We wanted to watch him throw, and our trainers watched him,” coach Lane Kiffin said. “They just felt that he was struggling a little bit with it. He wanted to keep going. We pulled him out.”

Kiffin said he didn’t feel this injury would be a long-term issue for Russell, and X-rays showed no problems with the elbow.

Russell said he came out to practice early hoping to loosen up the elbow, but never felt quite right once the session started.

“Just a little soreness from the other day,” he said. “I bumped Darren’s helmet while he was going to block, kind of full force as I was throwing. I kind of did what I can right now.”

Russell stayed on the field after practice and did footwork drills with offensive coordinator Greg Knapp.

Russell said he hoped to be back throwing Friday when the Raiders hold two practices. Kiffin said the team will put Russell through some on-field tests at the beginning of practice to see if he is ready to go full bore.

“I’m going to try and get out and practice as much as I can,” Russell said. “I really haven’t made any decisions about it yet.”

After missing all of training camp a year ago in a contract dispute, Russell is being given as much work as possible this summer in order to be ready for the season.

Russell didn’t get the chance to show much as a rookie after being the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. He played catch-up after signing his $61 million contract in the second week of the season. He didn’t step on the field until December, playing as a reserve in three games before starting the season finale against San Diego.

The Raiders spent Wednesday’s team session working on late-game situations that will be important for Russell to master once the season begins.

“All these scenarios for him are so important, and the game scenarios, the two-minute situations we went through today,” Kiffin said. “He got the mental reps, but it’s not the same as the physical reps.”

Andrew Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo split time at quarterback as they battle for the backup position behind Russell.

Both quarterbacks struggled at times, with Tuiasosopo throwing a pair of interceptions during seven-on-seven drills, and Walter being picked off by DeAngelo Hall on the first play of a late-game drive.

“We do have a competition for our second spot at quarterback. So that’s the positive way of looking at it, those guys are getting reps,” Kiffin said. “But that’s not what we want or need right now. We need to get our No. 1 guy in there, especially with so many new pieces around him — with the new left tackle, the new back, new receivers. Every day’s very valuable for him.”

Could it happen?

As we all know the dollar is weakening by the moment. But what if it is replaced as the global currency.I don’t think it will do you honestly think the world would want to use the euro? The U.S. is a nation of consumers.Do you think we are going to want to pay countries that we buy from with the euro?I don’t think we would want to be payed in euro’s either.Face it if the dollar does fall, i’m sure we americans will agree with our government on one thing. That is we don’t want to use the euro there is too much pride in the dollar. So we wouldn’t let if fall to the euro.Don’t know so much if our government would but thats a different story.Do you think the dollar will start a FULL recovery soon? Also if the U.S. economy collapses will the dollar do the same?Plus who should we trust more with the future of our nation Democrats or Republicans?

There would never be a point where we use euros for our everyday transactions. The US wouldn’t like it because it removes our control over our money supply, and the Europeans wouldn’t like it because it would tie their economy too closely to the US economy. Plus, the ECB has requirements for euro countries on budget deficits and national debt that we would most likely fail. We already do pay countries with the euro…when you buy a European product, the store (or its import firm) switches the dollars it got from you for euros to pay the European manufacturer. It works the opposite way for a European buying an American good. That’s just the way it works.

The major effect if the euro were to become the world’s reserve currency would be that it would increase the effective money supply, but if the Fed is paying good enough attention, they’ll take that extra money out of circulation to avoid inflation. The only other effect would be reputation-wise.

I don’t think the dollar will start a full recovery until we tackle the problem of our twin deficits. Right now we are just borrowing and borrowing, and other countries are beginning to think that we might not be able to repay it all. The weakening of the dollar has already helped our trade deficit by making our exports cheaper, but since it’s still so huge, it arguably needs to fall some more. Ultimately the cause of all of this is that we have very low national savings (basically private savings + taxes). In order to tackle this problem, we need to increase our savings rate, but since savings come at the expense of consumption, it could be painful.

If the US economy collapses, the dollar would as well.

“Trust” is a difficult word. They’re both politicians, so they listen to their special interests. They both have their flaws, but I’d put Obama over McCain, since he acknowledges that we have to raise our taxes to start to tackle our deficit, and he’s less likely to start another war. McCain says he’ll cut spending, but given that Congress does not like to do that, it’s easier to say than do.

What can I make with beef consomme that’s easy?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

BNHey there, so my pantry is kind of limited right now and I need to make dinner tonight, what can I make with beef consomme? I have noodles, like pasta, could I make some kind of a soup?

French Onion Casserole
serves 8

4-6 med/large tender onions, slided
6 oz swiss cheese (can use 12 oz, if you dare!)
1½ cups parmesan
3/4 cup beef bouillon
1/2 cup Dry Sherry
1 box of croutons, plain or flavored
3 Tbsp of butter
2 Tbsp of flour
Dash of pepper (I prefer fresh course ground pepper)

In a large pan, melt butter and on medium heat cook onions unitl tender (and “see through”) Stirring nearly nonstop. Add bouillon, pepper, flour and sherry. Keep stirring until thick and bubbley. Pour in 1 quart casserole dish. Add parm cheese, and swiss cheese then croutons. Bake in oven 350ºF until cheese bubbles, about 15 minutes, serve immediately.

*Variation-I like to layer the swiss cheeese and croutons, so I usually pour half the onions in dish, cover completely with swiss cheese then add layer of croutons, then pour the rest of onions, add, parm, swiss and rest of croutons.

Can be made the day before, and add the top layer of croutons right before baking at 325ºF for about 40 min.

What is this lower abdomen pain?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

burning sensation, lower abdomen, girl, sometimes lower back. I haven’t gotten my period yet. I’m 14 what is it?

you may be about to start your period. if your breasts are tender, meaning if they hurt when pressure is put on them, then you definitely will be getting your period soon.

to help with cramps, get prescription motrin. it really helps.

umm. if you can’t get a prescription, take an advil. i also reccomend Therma-Care Menstrual Heat Pads that stick to your underwear. those really help.

…………….

You have a urinary tract infection. Does it hurt to urinate or the urine smells funny? Then you need antibiotics, most commonly Bactrim. You can’t get it otc in the US, so either go to Mexico or to your clinic

Why is it impossible for lightning to strike the same place twice?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

It isn’t. Actually, Lighting often strikes the same place twice if the thing it strikes conducts electricity. Think about the Lightning Rods on top of skyscrapers. They get hit a lot. Right?

This theory is basically a theory of probability. Think of shooting a wall, while blindfolded, not aiming in any way. Think of the chances of hitting the exact same spot twice.

What most people don’t realize is that there are many factors that affect here lightning strikes. This theory would PROBABLY only work in a completely empty (Large) field.

Is it near impossible to work towards a BS in Mechanical Engineering with a full time job?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Ok, I went straight from high school into the military. I’m a helicopter mechanic and have the desire to become a mechanical engineer to take my career to a much higher level. However, I now have a family and still have to provide for them. I’m a hard worker and believe that I can do anything if I put my mind to it. I know it would be difficult, but how hard would it be to obtain this degree and still work a full time job. Also, I must add that I did not take physics nor chemistry in high school and have not really taken any college. I have management and other classes that I could apply towards the degree. My military career (8yrs) is finished and I want to start working towards the future, this is where I want to start. Could you guys please give me your best advice?

I did it. I earned a BSME in 6 years taking 1 semester off half way through. It was very difficult. I often slept only 3-4 hours each night in order to keep up with the work. You have to be very self-disciplined and have a high tolerance for being able to function on very little sleep. I also had kids and was the sole income provider for the family.

Apply for Pell Grants and financial aid to help with the finances. Get as much of the work out of the way at a community college as possible. Just be sure that every class counts toward your future university degree (not just towards general credit). It helped me to be going to an urban university with a lot of other adult/married students.

Try to get an engineering co-op or internship once you have a couple of semesters under your belt. They often pay well and are accommodating of your school schedule. You will also develop the non-technical skills required to practice engineering ahead of your classmates.

It is of prime importance to plan your schedule carefully. Get a good class schedule of all necessary engineering courses for several years into the future. You may have to talk to the department chair for this. Otherwise you could get to your last semester an be stuck with a class schedule that you can’t work around. Also, if a class meets your schedule but you don’t have the pre-requisites, etc, talk to the department chair or dean about an exception.

I began taking 9-15 hour semesters. Towards the end I bumped it up to 18-21 hour semesters. In hindsight I should have take the heavy loads up front in order to have more time to devote to senior level project courses.

I always registered for more classes than I could take in a semester. I would attend all classes for the first week of so to get a feel for the workload. Then I’d withdraw from whichever classes would overload me.

Make friends with students a year or two ahead of you. They can give you good advice about the best courses, professors, etc.

I never could have done it without some very deep motivations (provide for my kids, prove naysayers wrong). I made up my mind when I started that the only thing that would keep me from earning a degree was physical exhaustion and providing the very basics for my family. Even my mom and wife told me that I should quit because of the difficulty, time consumption, stress, etc.

So it is very difficult by also possible.

Chemistry help 10 points best answer?

a solution hydroxide solution is prepared by dissolving 6 g NaOH in 1 L of solution. what is the molar concentration of OH- in the soution? what is the pOH and the ph of the solution? what is the hydrogen ion concentration in the solution

Alright, so to find the concentration of a strong base (like NaOH), you want to find:

Molarity = moles NaOH/liters of solution

You know that you have 6 g of NaOH, so you need to convert to moles using the gram formula mass, which is 40 g/mol

6 g NaOH x 1 mol/40 g = 0.15 mol NaOH

Good so far? Now, just plug that in to find the molarity:

0.15 mol/ 1 L = 0.15 M

Since NaOH is a strong base, it will dissolve completely in solution, so you will have [Na+]=0.15 M and [OH-]=0.15 M.

To find the pOH, you follow the formula:

pOH = -log[OH-]
pOH=-log(.15)= 0.82

pH + pOH must = 14, so:

pH= 14- 0.82 = 13.18. A high pH is expected since this is a strong base and a higher pH indicates a higher basicity.

Finally, since [H+][OH-] = 1 x 10^-14, plug in your [OH-] value and find [H+].

What are our rights regarding my daughter?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

my daughter is 7 me and my husband want to move back to our home town but her biological father lives there she has not seen him in 5 years she cannot remember him she sees my husband as her father and uses his surname. me and my husband also have 2 other children together can i stop her biological father from making any contact with her he is named on her birth certificate what are our legal rights

Has he been paying child support, if not that gives you some leverage. I would first approach him about giving up his parental rights so your husband can adopt. He might agree and it will be easy. If not he should be paying child support, it doesn’t matter that you remarried or never asked for it before. If you take him to court he will wind up paying. If he doesn’t agree to sign off, you can use that to encourage him. If he refuses, I would seek child support.

……………

Legally, it all depends per state to be honest. If he has not been there for her or in her life, I’m not sure he wants to start now. Has he made any attempt to contact you regarding her? Why not let him see her, regardless? I mean, in the end, if you are LEGALLY her child (believe it or not in some states even tho you are birth parents, neither of you are deemed legal guardians), meaning you have legal custody of her, you can talk with your local court system about arranging something. But if he hasnt made any contact before, or tried to see her, i dont see him trying now. Plus there’s, from what im guessing, no signs of him harming her or putting her in harm’s way (since he hasnt been there, of course)…so this really could go either way. Just talk with the court system. Or a lawyer in your city/state.

……………….

I’m not sure what state you are in, but I know that in Ohio that if the non-residential pays child support, you can’t deny them visitation. If I were you I would try to get your ex to give all rights to you and try and give your new husband to take her in like one of his own. If she already knows him as her dad, and has his last name already then why not try to get your ex to give up all rights to her once and for all. Good luck with all of this, I know how it can be, very difficult, again

…………..

i dont know if you have gone after him for child support… or if your husband has adopted your daughter… but if he is back on his child support chances are that he is not going to want to pay anything now… so what you can do is tell him that you either want back child support or you want him to give up is parental rights and when he does that you can state that he is not to make contact with your daughter… and if he does contact her anyways he is going against a court order and that would be like violating a restraining order…

…………..

Unless his parental rights have been terminated, I don’t think you will be able to prevent him from doing so, if he wishes. Since you want to live in the same town, you will most likely eventually run into him in some setting. It sounds like a sticky situation, so I wish you luck and more importantly - that your daughter handles this change well.

……………….

There is a lot you didn’t tell us in order to answer this question.

Has your ex-husband been paying any child support? If he has, she should keep his name, he should have been able to see more ofter. He should have had her every other Christmas and Thanksgiving and at least a month during the summer.

If he has not been paying child support, he still has the right to see her since she is his daughter.

Now then, is he a good man? Does he live in a clean home and have food for her to eat? I see no reason he can’t see and have his daughter at specified times.

Is he an alcoholic, lives in a dirty house, can’t prepare a meal? There is no way I would let my daughter see or visit him until he cleans up his act.

I think the court would see it that way also.

The best thing to do is not move back to your home town and shake things up.

………………

if you havn’t gone to court for any visitational rights then u can stop her from seeing her father… the reason i know is because my best friend is living here along with her ex- husband and he only gets to see his daughter on the weekends if they didn’t go to court then she could of kept her daughter from seeing her father. i hope this

…………….

The laws have changed in recent years so it would be wise to reserch your rights.
Where you married to your daughters father?
Has your new husband adopted her?
Does her father pay matience for her?
These all play a part in your rights. I also had this problem myself…. My daughters father isnt named on her birth certificate and we were never married so he has no rights.
I spent sleepless nights over what would happen if he wanted to see her. Turns out he now has 4 kids and dosent want any contact! Men a!

…………..

In england,
fathers have no rights,
but they do have responsibilitys if the mother allows them to.
In USA i’m not too sure,
but make it clear to him you don’t want him to contact her.
Also, if it’s a small town,
she may find out through others,
so be careful :)

What can you bring on an airplane,Help!?

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Ok,So I’ve not been on an airplane since 1999.I am going on a trip in September. It will be about a 7 hour flight.I have heard different stories about what you can and can not bring on a plane.I will be flying US Airways and Canada Air.I want to try and cram my stuff into a small carry on bag but I heard you can’t carry shampoo and stuff. So my questions are,If I just bring a carry on bag, what can I pack in there, and if I bring a checked in bag, what can I pack?..I hate hate hate flying,it frightens me but it’s an important trip so I must fly.Can you give me tips for packing, what I can and can’t pack and any other pointers?

you can bring most of your stuff on the plane, but if its liquid it has to be 3 oz or less and all the liquids have to be in a quart sized seethrough bag…
They even let me bring my safety razor in the carry on bag, as long as it was in a quart sized bag as well
You can have liquids more than 3 oz but they have to be in your check bag, so they can look through it..

Here are two links of what you can bring and how to pack it!
The first is from air canada and the second us airways. Check them out and you’ll get the answers ;-)
